36 vues du Pic Saint Loup AKA Around a Small Mountain (Jacques Rivette, 2009)

I’ve been a long time admirer of Jacques Rivette, but didn’t even know he had a new movie out. For god’s sake, the guy is almost 90 years old!? So anyway, after I’ve downloaded it few months ago, I saved it for some special occasion and then – hate to admit it – forgot about it. Until now, that is.

So where else to start but with Jane Birkin? She’s still so radiant, no matter if she’s smiling or looking sad, she just steals every scene she’s in. Here she plays artist returning to this little travelling circus she was forced to leave years ago because of some family drama shit. She runs into this Italian playboy type with Jaguar and dark glasses, but he turns out to be her guardian angel that helps her clear her past. And he starts the process by fixing her car! So how cute is that I ask you?

Excellent stuff, filled with the sense of melancholy (circus wondering the countryside) and surprisingly short, especially for Rivette. I could watch this for another hour without problem.

9/10
